Area Information
OUR HISTORY
Surrounded by coal-mining camps and company towns, Albia was incorporated in 1859. Dedicated in 1903, the courthouse is a neo-classical treasure constructed of sandstone. Its architectural influence can be seen in the design of the buildings that currently populate the town square and business district.
The preservation of this area was made possible largely through the dedication and vision of one man, Robert Bates. An Albia native, Bates was a strong proponent of keeping the square’s Victorian charm alive. A gifted interior designer with considerable knowledge of the Victorian era, Bates launched a restoration project that would transform the city. He established a $2,000,000 trust to keep the revitalization efforts alive down through the years. Considered a National Historic District, the square is comprised of 92 beautifully preserved buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Our city enjoys roughly 200 days of sunshine each year. Average temperatures in July reach 87 degrees, while January lows fall to 14. Annual rainfall is about 36 inches. Yearly snow accumulation is around 30 inches.

Residents and visitors come together to admire the historic buildings on the square and in the business district of Albia.
Our beautiful city again takes center stage during the annual Victorian Stroll. Enjoy breakfast with Santa, live window displays, arts and crafts, a quilt show, period clothing, street venders and tours of historic buildings. Listen to the sounds of the Player Piano and the Albia Community Concert Choir.
Another highly anticipated event is the annual Rodders Car Show. Taking place on the square in late June, spectators admire some of the area’s finest automobiles while being treated to a hardy lunch.
